Arborra - a kernel containing a lifetime’s worth of songs and experience, kin to the forest floor and nourished by time. A sapling, still delicate and continuing to grow, containing in its leaves the imprint of trees past and the patterns of future foliage. Arborra’s transposition of this spectrum of vision uses primarily saxophone, piano and electronic resonances to manufacture a membrane between outer and inner space. Throughout his career as a musician, the Berlin based artist behind Arborra, has focussed on constructing his sound at an acoustic level, exploring the extremes of his instrumental set-up in combination with breath and breath noise. Steeped in the tradition of Jazz and Improvisation he has been performing and composing over a time span of decades. Following a period of search and introspection, the music on this debut EP marks out a new beginning. Arborra uses elements of ambient and experimental techniques, combining these with his musical heritage in an otherworldly manner.
The opening track from the Arborra EP, “Arborra” sketches a utopic conception and invites the listener into a porous space constructed with different breath durations, distortions and spiraling synth lines. Arborra conjures the elysian fields of contemplation and respite, embracing the past and unfolding present yet remaining orientated to the future. Air expands, Lungs contract; the lung of consciousness and the lung of objective knowledge. “Serenity”, signals an overcoming of obstacles with transcendence bolstered by a touch of romance and spontaneity which positively pensively pulses and playfully darts, following along with a curious noise. “Expanse” hits a more questioning set of motifs, exhibiting the wide dynamic range of sound which a saxophone can create; coming and going, with a touch of uncertainty gracefully hovering between matter and spirit. “Bardo” takes on a darker and more deeper hue, searching in a liminal space where one must tread carefully. In this piece we hear the clattering keys of the saxophone clearer than anywhere else on the EP, beckoning with trepidation - reflecting the fragility of being. Dreaming in the manner of a childlike wonder, the finale “Stargazer” pulls out of a liminal space and onto the cosmic plane. It cradles and soothes the listener while foreshadowing the next move for Arborra, facing towards what is beyond.
This is a project which draws on the elemental inspiration of breath, light and the lifeforce energy of nature. Driven by desires and visions from the heart, coloured with a deep green hue. Evolving from a fascination for building interactive systems and creating an empirical workflow - enabling the generation of a multitude of ideas at once. Created and engineered in the basement of a Berlin suburb, co-produced by David August.
